Timeless Modernity on Sutton Place: A CESAR Kitchen for a Manhattan Classic

Sutton Place has long been synonymous with understated Manhattan elegance, and this residence at 60 Sutton Place South is no exception. For this renovation, Gregory Hitchcock Design was brought in to reimagine the kitchen as a calm, contemporary hub that could match the building’s pedigree while supporting modern city living.

Working in close collaboration with CM Designs NY and KJ Remodeling, our team treated the kitchen as both a technical challenge and an architectural opportunity. The goal was a space that feels visually light yet highly functional, with every line and junction carefully considered to support the overall interior architecture.

At the heart of the project is the Maxima 2.2 collection by CESAR Kitchens, specified with the Micro Shaker door in a warm Nordic Oak finish. This thin-profile shaker introduces a subtle frame and shadow line that reads as modern millwork rather than traditional cabinetry, a crucial distinction for architects and designers working in sophisticated multi-family buildings.

To reinforce the quiet luxury of the Nordic Oak fronts, the kitchen is wrapped in premium surfaces fabricated by RA Stone Design. The continuity of tone between cabinetry and stone helps the room feel wider and more open, allowing the eye to move seamlessly from one work zone to another.

As with many NYC projects, storage and flow were non-negotiable. Tall elements and integrated appliances are organized into calm vertical blocks, while base cabinets and the primary work run maintain an uninterrupted horizontal datum.

The result is a kitchen that conceals its complexity behind simple, readable forms—ideal for open-plan living where the kitchen is always on display.

The design language continues into the custom bathrooms, designed brought to life by this project’s architect Christopher Martorana which echoes the same disciplined palette and detailing. This alignment between kitchen and baths allows the entire residence to feel like a single, cohesive composition rather than a series of unrelated rooms.

For industry collaborators, the Sutton Place Kitchen demonstrates how Italian systems like CESAR’s Maxima 2.2 can be precisely tailored to New York’s existing building stock.

From millwork coordination with CM Designs NY to on-site execution by KJ Remodeling and meticulous stonework by RA Stone Design, the project underscores GHD’s role as an integrator across disciplines.

Captured by photographer Costas Picadas, the final images reveal a space that is both photogenic and practical—clean in its geometry yet layered in texture and light.

It is a kitchen designed to age gracefully, anchored in timeless modernity rather than short-lived trends.
