Warm Formality: An East 87th Street Kitchen

Five floors above East 87th Street, in a prewar Carnegie Hill co-op, Gregory Hitchcock Design created a kitchen that reads as architecture rather than cabinetry.

Working alongside Hudson Union Architecture Studio, the room was rebuilt wall to wall in custom inset millwork finished in Benjamin Moore Snowfall White, with every interior lined in walnut veneer — a quiet warmth that reveals itself each time a door opens.

Glass-front uppers, lit from within, frame a 55½" custom hood surround above a Lacanche Sully range, while satin brass Armac Martin hardware and a three-inch solid wood bar with a waterfall edge give the room its jewelry.

The result is disciplined and generous at once: a working kitchen with the composure of a formal room.
